Restoration of “The Trail to Yesterday” 1918, Directed by Edwin Carewe

We are delighted to share that another one of Edwin’s films is in the process of being restored. This work is being done by Film Historian and Digital Filmmaker Bart Santello of Psychotropic Films.

As Bart explains in his communication, “The exteriors for this movie were filmed in Arivaca, Arizona, where I am a property owner, an enthusiast in experimental film; and organize a yearly film exhibition in the town for independent Arizona filmmakers.   The local librarian and the town of Arivaca’s historian approached me about the film’s production approximately 10-years ago, with the interest in locating the movie.”

Bart further goes on to say, “after an exhaustive search of archives, I was able to locate a surviving print at the eyeFILM Museum in Amsterdam”. I contracted with the museum archive to pull the print from their vaults and perform a 2K digital scan of the surviving nitrate print.  As with most nitrate prints there are some parts of the film are well-preserved, whereas other parts are heavily degraded. The version of the film I have is the Dutch distributed that was retitled: “Revenge of Dacota”.  The film is essentially complete, with just a scene or two missing.”

There is a blog where he provides much more insight into the inner workings of the movie and his restoration project. If anyone has information about the production or history of this film, or it’s cast and crew, please reach out to Bart.
